Vukovar was one of the most destroyed towns in the Balkan wars. It sits on the Danube on the border between Croatia and Serbia. In January 1998 the Croats regained control of the town, taking it back from the United Nations. We were sent there to help the ethnic Serbian radio stations get broadcast licenses. The battle for Vukovar was in 1991. Seven years later the buildings were still in ruins and people were still living in basements. Many of the residents were refugees, Serb refugees who replaced Croats who had been made refugees earlier. My friends in Croatia tell me that with the return of many of the original residents much of the town has since been rebuilt. Unlike other pages, these photos are not thumbnails. I was using a very small format digital camera in 1998. All photos copyright © Rich McClear 1998.
