There are so many definitions of the Balkans. Some people have defined it as Turkey in Europe, any area occupied by the Turks. That would put Hungary into the Balkans. Then there is a geographic definition that says the Balkans are a peninsula bordered by the Aegean, Ionian, Adriatic, and Black seas with the arc of the Carpathian Mountains defining the northern boundary. That puts Slovakia in the Balkans but rules the Czech Republic and most of Croatia out. Some people define the Balkans as the area bounded by the seas I outlined above but with the northern boundary being the Sava and Danube rivers. For the purposes of these photo pages I am of the Balkans as Turkey in Europe at 1800 school, (to illustrate Turkey in Europe today, see below) including Vojvodina in Serbia and Croatia because of Twentieth Century history.
