Totem Park

Officially it is Sitka National Historic Park, but everyone calls it Totem Park.  It has a collection of poles collected by Governor Brady.  They appeared at several worlds fairs around the beginning of the 20th Century, including the "Meet Me in St. Louis, Louis" fair.  New poles have been added, including a pole to commemorate the Tlingit "Freedom March" after the Battle of Alaska that was fought on this site  with the Russians in 1804.  Now Totem Park is on the edge of town and is a favorite place to walk.  In August you can see salmon spawn in Indian River and in the winter, when Swan Lake freezes over, the swans retreat to that same river as it runs through the park. The tall Sitka Spruce make it my cathedral.  Sitka National Park is on the walk from my home to town and I never tire of it.
